Skymarathon Chopok and Skyrace Jasná

Discover your limits!

Leitner Sport invites all mountain runners to the Low Tatras for a marathon and half marathon. The race starts on the southern side of Chopok at Srdiečko, and runners will cover perhaps all the most beautiful hiking trails on both sides of Chopok. The final climb from Biela púť in Jasná, through Tri vody, Luková, up to Chopok will test every competitor. The finish line for both routes is at Chopok (at an altitude of 2,000 m a.s.l.). The total elevation gain of the marathon route is 2,600 m and the half marathon route is 1,400 m.

Relay teams can also enter the marathon route, with each team member covering a section of approximately 10 km. The number of members in a relay team can be 4, 3, or 2. However, an exchange of team members must always take place at the handover point. Relay team members travel to individual sections by cable car.

The event is physically demanding. It is very beneficial for runners to have experience in mountain running.

The event is included in the UTMB and ITRA calendar for 2026.

Course

Skymarathon Chopok 43km/2600m

The main course takes you across the entire area surrounding Chopok and showcases the most beautiful views the Low Tatras have to offer.

The race starts at Hotel Srdiečko, where your first climb takes you past the Kosodrevina mountain hotel up to the Milan Rastislav Štefánik mountain hut (aid station 1). From there, a short, slightly technical descent brings you back to the main trail (Magistrála). You then pass Kosodrevina hotel once more (aid station 2) and follow the blue trail up a gentle, rolling climb to Krížske sedlo, where the finest views open up as you join the main ridge of the Low Tatras. The ridge section from Krížske sedlo to Chopok is relatively non-technical and climbs gently all the way. You ascend up to Kamenná Chata pod Chopkom (aid station 3), from where the remaining rolling ridge section leads you to Široké sedlo.

Please note that on sunny weekend days, the main ridge of the Low Tatras (especially around Chopok) is a very popular hiking destination. Please respect other people on the trails and always alert hikers when passing them.

From Široké sedlo, you face the primary descent, starting with technical switchbacks that transition into a steep, granite-paved downhill. This section is quite technical and can be slightly dangerous in wet weather, so take extra care here. Next is a very short uphill that leads onto a wide cycle path, descending gently all the way to Demänovská dolina (aid station 4). From Demänovská dolina, all that remains is a solid vertical kilometer back up to Chopok. You will first climb gently through the hotel area, then through the forest. Just below Luková (approx. 450 meters of elevation gain to the finish), the slope steepens considerably to test whatever energy you have left until the finish line.

Skyrace Chopok 23km/1400m

The shorter course starts at the Kosodrevina cable car station. Like the main route, it initially takes you toward Štefánikova hut, but turns left before reaching it toward the main ridge of the Low Tatras. This brings you to Široké sedlo, from where the route continues identically to the main course.

Location and logistics

ATTENTION: THE EVENT TAKES PLACE ON THE SOUTHERN SIDE OF CHOPOK !!!
If you book accommodation on the northern side in Demänovská dolina, you will have to drive approximately 80 km by car in the morning to reach the start line, as the cable cars do not run that early!

Getting to the start :

Airports
The most easily accessible airports by public transport are:
Poprad Airport (TAT) - Bus or train to Brezno, multiple times a day, around 2-3h
Košice Airport (KSC) - Trains and direct buses to Brezno, around 2.5-4h
Bratislava Airport (BTS) - Bus or train to Brezno, including direct connections, around 4h
Vienna Airport (VIE) - Bus to Bratislava, then same as BTS.
Budapest Airport (BUD) - Direct FlixBus from Budapest to Banská Bystrica multiple times a day.

Other airports such as KRK and KTW are also fairly close but are not very well connected by public transport. Car rental is recommended in those cases.

Banská Bystrica is a bigger city that is very well connected with Brezno (bus/train every 30-60 min).
On the opposite side, Liptovský Mikuláš looks close to Brezno, but only about 2 buses per day connect them.
Poprad is somewhere in between, it is connected, but it usually takes longer to get there.

For finding bus and train connections we use cp.sk

Getting to start:
You can reach Hotel Srdiečko via the bus line Brezno - Mýto pod Ďumbierom - Bystrá - Tále - Srdiečko.
This bus runs approximately 4 times a day. However, it will not get you to the start in time, as the schedule starts too late in the morning.

Accomodation
We strongly recommend staying at Hotel Srdiečko***, as it is the main venue for the entire event, located right by the start area and registration desk.
There are also more accomodations available around 1-1.5km from start. After that there is just around 6km of road with forest.
Other accomodations are available at Tále (around 7km from start) and then Bystrá/Mýto pod Ďumbierom (12km from start).

Parking:
There are approximately 80 parking spaces in the paid parking lot at Hotel Srdiečko. Unofficially, it is also possible to park for free along the roadside.
Within one kilometer (and approx. 100 meters of elevation gain) from the start, there are also the paid parking lots Krupová and Trangoška, which together offer over 500 spaces. However, the parking lot at Srdiečko should be sufficient.

Rules

GENERAL RULES

To participate in our Marathon and Skyrace races, all competitors must:

  • be thoroughly prepared and fully understand the physical demands, distance, and duration of the event
  • possess a high level of mountain self-sufficiency to independently manage challenges that may arise along the route, including:
    • handling harsh weather conditions (such as high altitude, severe winds, cold temperatures, fog, rain, hail..) without external assistance
    • managing severe physical or mental fatigue, digestive problems, muscle or joint distress, and other minor injuries
  • recognize that the organizers are not responsible for helping participants overcome the aforementioned physical or logistical challenges, and that personal safety depends entirely on each runner’s ability to adapt to unexpected circumstances
  • acknowledge that prior experience in similar races is beneficial, but not solely sufficient for completing this event

Participants must :

  • refrain from leaving litter anywhere along the course (waste must be disposed of exclusively at aid stations/checkpoints)
  • complete the entire official route in sequential order without taking shortcuts (unannounced monitoring points will be placed along the course to enforce this)
  • avoid pushing, obstructing, or causing harm to other runners, race volunteers, or spectators
  • provide immediate aid to anyone in distress on the course (runners, staff, or bystanders)
  • carry all mandatory equipment described in the "Mandatory Equipment" section throughout the entire race
ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT RULES
  • Competitors must strictly comply with all time limits at designated checkpoints. If a runner decides to withdraw (DNF), they MUST immediately notify the nearest checkpoint marshal or call the organizer number to avoid unnecessary search and rescue operations.
  • Your race number must be clearly visible on your body at all times and cannot be transferred to another person without official registration change.
  • Outside help, pacing by non-registered runners, or receiving support outside official aid stations is strictly prohibited.
  • Poles are allowed. However, if you choose to use them, you must carry them with you from start to finish. Receiving poles during the race or discarding/handing them off along the route is strictly prohibited.
The organizers reserve the right to modify the course layout, time cutoffs, and checkpoint locations when necessary. Any updates will be communicated to competitors in a timely manner.
SAFETY

The course follows technical terrain, presenting inherent risks of severe injury or death typical of high-mountain endurance events. Potential hazards include, but are not limited to: collisions with motor vehicles, obstacles, rocks, trees, or other people; falls and slips; acute physical exertion injuries; severe weather hazards such as lightning, hail, blizzards, or forest fires; drowning; interactions with wildlife, insects, or reptiles; and medical conditions including hypothermia, heatstroke, dehydration, altitude sickness, or complications arising from extreme physical strain.

By entering the race, competitors explicitly acknowledge these hazards and assume full personal responsibility for their participation, safety, and actions under all event conditions.
In light of these factors, all participants are advised to secure personal accident and rescue insurance prior to the event (the organizers do not provide individual insurance coverage).
Read more about mountain sports insurance here: Alpenverein - Leitner Sport

REGISTRATION TRANSFER
  • The entry fee is non-refundable. However, if a runner cannot participate due to medical reasons, their registration fee can be transferred to the following year, provided it is reported via email prior to the event.
PRIZES
  • A prize of €500 is awarded for breaking the course record on any route.
  • The top three finishers in each category (provided the category was opened) receive valuable non-monetary prizes.
